We got a call from the animal shelter early this spring, wanting a home for two white farm geese. We have a pond on our property, we took the geese and they have taken to living here well. We feed them each day, and they love being on the pond. My concern is this winter when the pond possibly freezes. My husband built a shelter for them, and they refuse to go in, We try to put their food bowl in there each day so that they will get used to going in, but they just drag the food bowl out. I have grown so attached to them, I don't want them to suffer this winter, but they seem to be stubborn. Yesterday the wind chill was 14 and very strong winds, they still stayed on the pond. They follow me around when I go out to feed them, one of them will let me pet it, but the other one has never let me get with more than maybe a foot and a half close to it. I just don't want anything to happen to them. They are so sweet. I just want to make sure they survive the winter. Thanks!
Will farm geese survive the winter on our pond? They refuse to go into the shelter we made for them.?
if they are happy still swimming in that pond, when it gets to cold they will go for shelter, put some hay inside
Reply:you have done all you can do. If the have a shelter they can get to they will if they need to. they probably are afraid they will get trapped. after they get use to it they might use it.
Reply:Holly- If its too cold for the geese they will fly south. Many Geese live in Omaha where I used to live. It is always windy there and many times the temp falls below zero. Sometimes even -20.
