REfinishing a deck questions Please advise..?

Last summer I refinished my deck (15ish years old)

I power washed the whole deck and belt sanded certain areas that needed it...I put on a sealer/waterproofing a few coats and a little more in some areas. I used a thick roller for decks and brushed corners/railings etc..

It looked and felt great!

I went out and looked at the deck after an East Coast winter (real cold) The finish has 'peeled up' in a lot of spaces...

Whole pieces of the finish are just peeling up..

Where do I go wrong?

THe wood is a little old and has hairline cracks throughout

Could this have let moisture through the winter?

Did I put to many coats down of the finish?

Should I have brushed the whole deck?

Please, any help would be sweet !

THis project killed my back and I wanna do it right next time.

Thanx!

REfinishing a deck questions Please advise..?
i think it was the delivery....try spraying the waterproofing...we live in the midwest and have never had a peeling incident
Reply:My husband said you put the waterproofing on too thick. You are supposed to let it soak into the wood. Make sure you are using the right stuff.
Reply:I am in Alabama so I don't have experience with really cold winters. I have a very large deck around half of my house. It's 14 X 60 or so and another 8 X 40 or so. I didn't use anything except a good grade of oil base porch and deck paint. I do have lots of heat in the summer and have to paint again every several years.

I really don't think you can apply too much water sealer. I think the problem is using a paint that will adhere to the wood after using the sealer. Again, I'm not familiar with extreme cold. I suggest that you talk to someone at a paint store, not Walmart to get suggestions. Good luck.
Reply:You poor fool! First off...move the hell away from the East Coast...say to a warmer climate like New Mexico. Those Nor' East'ers are a *****! Wood likes to expand and shrink in extreme temps, so unless you stained you deck in overcast 70 degree weather, it dosn't surprize me that it chipped and peeled. Also, you need more than just a sealer...you needed a semi-transparent stain that penetrates the wood. Even then you needed a second coat two weeks later and then plan on an every year maintinance. Next time buy Trex Deck!
