Ford 302 running problem?

I have a 1987 Ford conversion van with a 302FI and auto OD tranny with some slight running problems, over she runs good but a few things. When cold starting the engine usually stalls once or twice before idling down, also when giving it gas to accelerate it will sometimes hesitate and octane knock before downshifting out of overdrive into drive. She only has 70,000 miles on her and has never seen a winter, any ideas would be sweet.

Thanks, Jim S.

Ford 302 running problem?
OD is only for highway use thats why, unless thats where your driving it,somthing i think its called a modual on the tranny but not positive i'd ask a ford dealer what the think, thet'll know better then any body, and get a Haynes manual for $20 at the auto store or at http://haynes.com it's the best manual you can have.
Reply:For the knock, try upping the octane slightly and see if that helps, that's assuming you have the timing set correctly at factory specifications. If you aren't sure, you might look at the timing first.

For the cold start, it that the throttle body fuel injection system? You might look at the cold start system on it, I don't think it's computer controlled in the 87. Clean and lubricate any linkage that sets the choke, and see if that helps.
Reply:Check fuel filter(s) and pressure.If it's computer controled get ya a code reader $30.
Reply:Try replacing the coolant sensor on the engine. It's simple and inexpensive to try. Good luck!
